Phillip Thorpe qualified as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand before moving to Hong Kong to work with the Hong Kong Securities Commission. He was  appointed the CEO of the Hong Kong Securities Exchange and then moved to the UK where he  became the CEO of the London Commodity Exchange, and later a Managing Director of the Financial Services Authority (FSA). In 2001, Mr Thorpe took up a new  role in the US as President of the Futures Industry Institute, and a year later he relocated to the UAE to  establish a new regulatory body in Dubai. It was in March 2005 when Mr Thorpe became Chairman and Chief Executive of the  QFC regulatory authority.

Esam Yousif Janahi is one of the founders of Gulf Finance House which is now a leading provider of Islamic banking services and products. He is currently Chairman of the Bahrain Financial Harbour; Vice Chairman of Khaleeji Commercial Bank; Chairman of Gulf Energy and Chairman of Energy City Qatar. As a banker, Mr. Janahi’s experience spans structuring and managing funds, asset management and financial advisory services. He was also honoured by the Prime Minister of Bahrain in February 2005 for contributing to excellence in the region. Mr. Janahi has also been elected a member of the parliament of the Shura Council of the Kingdom of Bahrain, for the second term in a row. In the past Mr Janahi has worked as a financial consultant with Merrill Lynch, and as an auditor with Arthur Anderson & Co. He has extensive experience of working on multi-billion dollar projects.

Niall S K Booker  joined the HSBC Group in 1981 as an International Manager. His last assignment was as Group General Manager and Chief Executive Officer, India. Prior to this, he was Chief Executive Officer, for International Private Banking, Americas. Mr. Booker has gained extensive international experience and skills in building businesses and infrastructures in various positions within the HSBC Group. Over the years, he has worked in retail banking in Brunei and the UK, syndicated loans and specialised finance in Hong Kong, banking operations in Abu Dhabi and Trade Finance and corporate banking in Japan. He became Deputy Chairman and CEO of HSBC Bank Middle East Ltd. in May 2006. Educated at Trinity College Glenalmond, Niall Booker has a Master’s degree in History and Law from Cambridge University.

Mr. Ghandour is a Principal in the Private Equity Group at Gulf Capital, a leading investment company in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Prior to joining Gulf Capital, Mr. Ghandour was a business advisor to several regional and international organisations and a serial entrepreneur. He is a board member of the Gulf Venture Capital Association (chairing the Statistics and Information Committee), an advisor to the President of the Arab Science & Technology Foundation, and a member of Young Arab Leaders. He is a frequent presenter at conferences about the subject of private equity and venture capital, and has several publications in this field.

Ray is the Global Head of BT’s Business Continuity, Security and Governance Practice (BCSG), having worked in information security for over 21 years. He is an experienced and recognised practitioner, particularly in the use and implementation of the BS7799 standard and incident management procedures. Before joining BT in 2004, Mr Stanton was head of UK security services for Unisys Corporation. Prior to that, he was head of information security for British Aerospace Limited, working primarily on its commercial projects, such as its role in Airbus. He provided extensive support to the company's internal audit department in carrying out systems security audits and business unit reviews against BS7799. He established the company’s information security group and was responsible for the introduction of production level secure web systems, secure e-mail, company-wide intrusion detection systems and full-scale public key infrastructure (PKI) pilots. Mr Stanton has worked for both government and commercial organisations, and served in the UK Armed Forces for ten years.

Brad Bourland has been the Chief Economist at Samba Financial Group, formerly Saudi American Bank, in Riyadh, since 1999. He leads the economic research team and publishes regularly on issues related to the Saudi and global economies, and the world oil market.  Mr Bourland is also head of cross-border risk management for the bank, which involves managing the bank’s exposures outside Saudi Arabia.  Before joining Samba, Mr Bourland spent 18 years as a diplomat, economist, and manager with the U.S. Department of State.  He was in Riyadh as the American Embassy’s First Secretary responsible for financial affairs and has served on the US negotiating team for Saudi accession to the World Trade Organisation.  Mr Bourland has a BA and MA magna cum laude from the University of Utah, and is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charterholder.

Bruno Daher is a Managing Director and Head of Private Banking for the Middle East/Indian Sub-Continent at Credit Suisse. He is also Co-CEO of the Middle East at bank level and is based in Dubai. Mr Daher joined Credit Suisse in August 2006 from Merrill Lynch, where he was a Managing Director and Head of Global Private Clients for the Middle East & India. During his 21 years with the company, he held a number of senior positions in the Global Private Client area - focusing specifically on the Middle East for the last 12 years. His career at Merrill Lynch included assignments in Paris, Geneva and Bahrain. He holds a BA in Economics from the Boston College School of Arts and Sciences and an MBA from the Boston College Graduate School of Management.

Saadat Muzaffar heads the Wealth Management and Non-Resident Division of Millennium Capital International, the investment and international banking arm of Dubai Islamic Bank. He is responsible for spearheading the initiative to set up the first ever integrated Wealth Management platform catering to the needs of High Net Worth Individuals for Shari’a-compliant investment solutions. He started his career with HSBC and rose to senior positions over the years. Prior to DIB, Mr Muzaffar was Vice President of Investments at Merrill Lynch, Dubai. From 1997 to 2000, Mr Muzaffar was also Deputy Head & Senior Representative with Credit Suisse, Dubai. He was previously Vice President and Financial Advisor with Prudential-Bache (Dubai) for the Middle East, India & Pakistan.

Dr. Nasser H. Saidi is the Chief Economist of the Dubai International Financial Centre and Executive Director of the Hawkamah-Institute for Corporate Governance at the DIFC. He is a former Minister of Economy and Trade and Minister of Industry of Lebanon (1998-2000). He was the First Vice-Governor of the Central Bank of Lebanon for two successive mandates, 1993-1998 and 1998-2003. He is also co-chair with the OECD of the MENA Corporate Governance Working Group. He was a Member of the UN Committee for Development Policy (UNCDP) for two mandates over the period 2000-2006, appointed as a member by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan. He has written a number of books and publications addressing macroeconomic, capital market development and international economic issues in Lebanon and the region. Prior to his public career, Dr. Saidi pursued a successful career as an academic. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Economics from the University of Rochester in the U.S.A, a M.Sc. from University College, London University and a B.A. from the American University of Beirut.

Niall Coburn has been with the DFSA since March 2003 as Director of Enforcement. He is responsible for undertaking the enforcement activities on the part of the DFSA within the DIFC. Prior to joining the DFSA, Mr Coburn was a Principal Enforcement Lawyer with the Australian Securities Investments Commission (ASIC) and lectured in law part-time at a number of universities. He has conducted large-scale corporate investigations both in Australia and internationally. In 2002, Mr Coburn received an ASIC Australia Day Honour Medal for his work in corporate investigations. He has been admitted as a Barrister of the High Court of Australia and holds a Bachelor of Law and Arts and a Master of Laws from Melbourne University. Mr Coburn has had a variety of material published both nationally and internationally.

Mehmet Simsek is the Head of Fixed Income Strategy & Economics Research for Emerging EMEA. Before joining Merrill Lynch, Mr Simsek was a senior economist at Bender Securities (a Deutsche Bank subsidiary). Prior to that, he worked as a senior economist for the US Embassy in Ankara for about four years. Mr Simsek received his B.Sc. in Economics with honours from Ankara University in 1988, and he holds an M Phil degree in Finance and Investment from the University of Exeter (1993). As a member of the Economics & Strategy and Turkey teams, he has been ranked among the top three analysts by the Institutional Investor Survey and Extel Surveys, for the past five years.

Anouar Hassoune is an Associate Director with Standard & Poor’s and is based in Paris. He joined the company in 2001 and has been focusing on analyzing banks based in the Middle East (North Africa, the Levant, and Gulf countries). Mr Hassoune is also involved in a number of analytical teams within S&P, including the European Criteria Committee, the Basel II Global Industry Focus Team, the Middle East task force, and the Islamic finance Global Industry Focus Team (which he chairs). Prior to joining S&P, he worked as an emerging market credit analyst for BNP Paribas and Société Générale, both in Paris. Mr Hassoune holds advanced degrees in economics, accounting and finance, and also in political science.

From 2000 to 2002, he was the FT’sWall Street correspondent covering mergers, acquisitions, bankruptcies andrestructurings. He also played a leading role in the paper’s coverage of the 9/11attacks and their aftermath. Previously, Peter covered media, telecoms andtechnology for the FT in London. A Dutch national, Peter was born andbrought up in the Netherlandsbefore moving to the UK to studyeconomics and politics at the University of Bristol. He has aMaster’s Degree from the London School of Economics.

Tony also has worked as Investment Correspondent for the paper, covering the rise of shareholder activism, corporate governance and the fund management industry. Brendan Goffinet is an Executive Director in the Global Capital Markets Division, and he is in charge of Morgan Stanley’s Capital Markets operation for the Middle East and North Africa. Previously, Mr Goffinet focused primarily on the investment grade Telecom, Media and Technology (TMT) clients in North America and he lead the TMT effort from 2004 through to 2006. Prior to this he was part of Morgan Stanley’s Emerging Market group in New York, responsible for the Latin American sovereign coverage effort. His most recent achievement to date includes executing the largest corporate debt IPO the global markets have seen, with a US$6.5 billion debt offering for Cisco Systems. Before joining Morgan Stanley in 1998, Mr Goffinet worked in London for Royal Bank of Canada, Hambros Bank and Hill Samuel Merchant Bank.

Shakeel Sarwar is the Head of Asset Management at SICO and he has over eleven years of investment industry experience in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the U.K and Pakistan. Before joining SICO, he was part of Riyadh Bank’s Asset Management Department that managed over US$3 billion in Saudi equities. Adel A. El-Labban has been the Group Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Ahli United Bank since November 2000. He is accountable to the Board of Directors for the management of all aspects of the commercial, retail and private banking businesses of the bank and its subsidiaries and affiliates in Bahrain, the UK, Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq and Egypt. Prior to his tenor at AUB, Mr. El-Labban was the CEO of United Bank of Kuwait in London, AUB’s corporate predecessor.  In earlier assignments, he led the Commercial International Bank, (Egypt’s leading private sector bank), for 10 years as its Managing Director. Concurrently, he was the first Chairman of Commercial International Investment Company, a CIB managed affiliate and Egypt’s first diversified investment bank and private equities house.  Mr. El-Labban has also worked internationally, serving as a Vice President in Corporate Finance at Morgan Stanley’s Investment Banking Division in New York. Mr. El-Labban holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Economics from the American University in Cairo.

Oscar Silva is Chief Executive and a member of the Board of Directors at the Investment Banking Group of NBK Capital, a subsidiary of National Bank of Kuwait. He is based in NBK Capital’s office in Kuwait and leads a team of professionals located in Kuwait, DIFC, UAE, Istanbul and Beirut.  Mr. Silva has 25 years of global and regional experience and has held positions in Structured, Project Finance and Capital Markets in Citibank’s offices in New York and Tokyo. He relocated to London with The Long-Term Credit Bank of Japan (LCTB) as Managing Director and Board Member of LTCB’s emerging markets business. He then founded his own investment company in London and  managed two capital growth investment funds focused on emerging markets, before joining PriceWaterhouseCoopers in London as Head of Structured Finance and Securitisation. Before joining NBK Capital, Mr. Silva was based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he built and led the Corporate and Structured Finance business of The National Commercial Bank.

Having built assets under management to £7 billion within three years at SG Asset Management, Nicola left to join AMP in Sydney to run its fund management business, but due to family circumstances she was not able to take up this post.
